If you are planning to add a rug under your bed but are not exactly sure how to go about it, this article will explain everything you need to know about taking this design step. Here we explain the obvious and obscure factors to consider when placing a rug under your bed.

Everything you should know about placing a rug under your bed

Firstly, what are the reasons to have a rug under your bed?

  • Comfort

A rug under the bed shields you from the discomfort of putting your feet on a cold floor in the mornings when your body is just waking up.

  • Improved aesthetics

A rug gives your entire bedroom a nicer look. The bed is typically the focal point of a bedroom. Adding a rug under it helps it play this role better.

  • Noise reduction

If the flooring in your bedroom tends to bounce sound, you can reduce echoes in the room by placing a rug under your bed.

  • Protect the floor

Placing a rug under the bed will protect the floor in your bedroom. If the floor is already damaged, a rug is a cheap and effective way to hide the defect.

  • Prevent damage to furniture

Hard smooth floors are often slippery, especially when they are wet. Furniture can move unexpectedly and get damaged. A rug will prevent this by increasing surface friction.

What is the best way to place a rug under your bed?

There are many ways to position a rug under your bed. The placement will vary depending on the size of the rug, the size of your bed, and how large or small your bedroom is. How you place your rug will also be influenced by how many furniture items you plan to put on top of it.

Having said that, here are the three standard options for placing a rug under your bed:

  • The rug is completely under the bed

Here, the rug covers the floor space under the entire length of the bed and extends some distance beyond the foot of your bed. This arrangement lets you place a nightstand and foot bench on the rug. This placement is good if you have a large bedroom.

  • Two-thirds of the bed over the rug

Here, only two-thirds of the floor area beneath the bed is covered by the rug, the foot of the bed, and the foot bench. This leaves the floor area where the head of the bed frame and nightstand are located bare. This arrangement is for smaller bedrooms.

  • The rug extends from the center to the base of the bed

This is for when your rug is not large enough to cover the entire length of your bed. In this arrangement, you position the rug halfway from the length of the bed to the foot of the bed.

What rug size should you buy?

The two most important factors to consider when deciding the size of rug to buy are the size of the bed and the size of the bedroom. A massive rug in a tiny room and a tiny rug inside an expansive room are two scenarios you want to avoid.

Here are the four basic rules for choosing the size of your rug:

  1. There should be a minimum of five inches of space between the bedroom wall and the rug. The rug you place under your bed should never extend from wall to wall.

  2. The rug size must be proportionate to the room size. As the room size increases, the rug size should also increase. The impact of the rug will be lost if it the room is too large. A large rug in a small room will make the room feel even smaller.

  3. The size of your rug must be relative to the size of the bed. The design of the room will become unbalanced if these sizes don’t correlate.

  4. Your rug can get too big. If this happens the rug will swallow up the bed, your bed will fade into the rug rather than contrast it. You don’t want this.

Here are general guidelines for choosing the size of your rug based on how big your bed is. For king-sized beds rug size should be 8’×10’ or 9’×12.' For queen-sized beds, the rug size should be 8’×10’ or 9’×12.' For full-sized beds, a 5’×8’ rug is enough. For twin beds use a rug that is 9’×12.’
